HOW TO SET UP A COMMUNITY OWNED HYDRO SCHEME
WORKSHOP - from Concept to Completion - and OPEN DAY
Date: Friday 2 July
Time: 11am – 3pm
Venue: Morden Hall Park (SM4 5JD, Morden Tube).
h2oPE (Water Power Enterprises) have considerable experience in establishing community owned hydro schemes. They set up the country's first such scheme in New Mills, Derbyshire and at Settle in north Yorkshire. They are currently working to establish 3 community owned hydro schemes during 2010 in Bainbridge, north Yorkshire and in Stockport.
h2oPE is a social enterprise, funded by the Co-operative Group, Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust and Key Fund Yorkshire. Previous workshops in 2009 were attended by over 200 people from 78 community groups.
The workshop will look in detail at the financial, legal and regulatory processes that all schemes must engage with, as well as exploring the technical issues involved with hydro schemes. The financial details will include grants, share offers and bank loans while the regulatory processes will examine planning permission, the Environment Agency and lease arrangements.
The workshop is FREE to community groups. A charge of £250 per person will apply to attendees from local authorities.
Participants will be guaranteed to leave the workshop armed with a great deal of detailed knowledge about how to go set up a community owned hydro site. They will also learn about how to enter into a partnership with h2oPE who are always looking to establish community owned hydro schemes.

Open Day
In addition to the workshop, we will also be holding an ‘Open day’ - just come along:-
MD of h2oPE, Steve Welsh explains:
“To celebrate Co-operatives Fortnight we wanted to offer some practical advice to anyone interested in micro hydro or who might want to set up their own community-owned renewable electricity co-op, or a chance for people to become members of our latest River Bain Hydro co-op. It’s a chance to come along and find out what’s needed in order to get going. We’ve got a few schemes under our belt now and are happy to share our experiences.”
